Meet Betsy Shaulis

Carroll County and Lanark Attorney Betsy Shaulis is the Democrat nominee for the office of Resident Circuit Judge of Carroll County in the 2020 elections. This judgeship will fill the vacancy of the Honorable Val Gunnarsson.
The 15th Judicial Circuit in northwestern Illinois is comprised of Carroll, Jo Daviess, Ogle, Lee, and Stephenson counties. Each county has one Resident Judge who is required to be a resident of her respective county. The Illinois primary election will be held on March 17, 2020, and the general election is on Nov. 3, 2020.
Shaulis is an attorney in Lanark, where she and her husband, Kipp Meyers, practice law at Meyers & Shaulis, P.C. She is the CEO and shareholder of the law firm. Prior to establishing the firm, she was an associate attorney in Galena and she served as assistant public defender in Jo Daviess County. Shaulis has been an Illinois-licensed attorney since 2006.
Betsy Shaulis was born and raised in Carroll County. She is the youngest of three daughters to David Shaulis and the late Kathleen Shaulis (Lower).
Shaulis is a 1994 graduate of Eastland High School. She was a Rotary exchange student through the Mount Carroll Rotary Club in Brazil and she was a Rotary exchange student through the former Milledgeville Rotary Club in Argentina. She is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish.
Shaulis received her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Lake Forest College in 1999. She earned a Master of Arts in International Economics from DePaul University in 2001. In 2006, Shaulis earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Tulsa, College of Law. While a law student, she clerked for Carroll County Circuit Judge Val Gunnarsson and Associate Judge John F. Joyce.
Shaulis is a member of the Carroll County Bar Association, and she has been its president since 2013. She is also a member of the Stephenson County Women’s Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association.
Shaulis serves on the executive committee of Timber Lake Playhouse in Mount Carroll, and is the organization’s secretary and chair of the governance committee. She is a member of the Cornerstone Project, NFP, which has been instrumental in saving some of Lanark’s most historic buildings. She is also a member of the Freeport YMCA.
